Richmond Hill in Richmond , London is a hill that rises gently from the Thames on its north side . It stretches from the site of Richmond Palace to the Richmond Gate of Richmond Park , the former royal hunting ground that Charles I created . The hill slopes significantly to the river in a south-westerly direction, the elevation is less pronounced in south and east direction.

The hill has the only view in England that was protected by a law, the Richmond, Petersham and Ham Open Spaces Act of 1902 , following the controversial sale of Glover's Island . The law protects the hill land and its immediate surroundings to preserve the view to the west and south. The look was painted by Joshua Reynolds and JMW Turner . Walter Scott described it as an unsurpassed landscape.

The panorama can be seen from the Terrace Walk , which was laid out near the top of the hill in the 18th century. The path leads above Terrace Gardens , which, like the path, are Grade II * protected monuments. After Henry VII had built the Richmond Palace, the place Richmond developed. Richmond Hill attracted a lot of attention because of its location and was built with impressive houses of well-known owners.

The first houses were built on the hill where The Vineyard is now . These homes include Clarence House , Halford House , Michel's Almshouses, and the Vineyard House.

A road that runs southeast from Richmond to the top of the hill is also called Richmond Hill.
