Max Waechter

Sir Max Leonard Waechter , born Wächter , (born October 3, 1837 in Stettin ; † October 3, 1924 ) was a British businessman, art collector, philanthropist and pioneer of the unification of Europe .

Life

Waechter was born in Stettin as the great-grandson of an Evangelical Lutheran pastor. In 1859 he went to England and was naturalized in 1865 . He became a partner in the trading company Bessler, Waechter, and Co.

He lived in the Terrace House on Richmond Hill and bought Glover's Island in 1900 , which he donated to the Borough of Richmond . In doing so, he helped get the view across the Thames from Richmond . He was High Sheriff of Surrey in 1902 and was knighted as a Knight Bachelor ("Sir").
