Haussler at the Tour de France 2018

Heinrich Haussler (born February 25, 1984 in Inverell , New South Wales , Australia ) is an Australian cyclist living in Freiburg im Breisgau .

Career

Heinrich Haussler grew up in Inverell (Australia). Since his father is from Germany, he was also a German citizen until July 2010. At the age of almost 15, on the advice of a German friend, he left his country of birth and first came to his grandmother in Spiesen-Elversberg near Saarbrücken . Living with his friend near Nuremberg , he did his first races for RC Herpersdorf and soon moved to Cottbus .

Haussler's first station as a professional cyclist was with the Gerolsteiner team , after he was a stagiaire with the T-Mobile team last year . He celebrated his first success as a professional cyclist in 2005 with the victory of the 19th stage of the Vuelta a España , which he was able to secure with the sprint victory of a four-man leading group.

The year 2009 was his most successful to date: He achieved second places in the classics of Milan – Sanremo and the Tour of Flanders, as well as a stage win in the Tour de France . At Milan-Sanremo he opened the sprint for his captain Thor Hushovd , pulled the sprint through when a gap opened up and was only intercepted shortly before the finish by Mark Cavendish . On the Tour of Flanders, he pulled away from a group of chasers one kilometer from the finish and came second behind Stijn Devolder . On the 13th stage of the tour , after a solo journey of 200 km, he won a rainy stage in the Vosges with 4:11 minutes ahead of Amets Txurruka .

At the beginning of April 2009, Haussler announced that he would start in 2010 for the national team of his native Australia. However, the world association UCI announced in August that the application to change the starting nation was rejected on the grounds that Haussler had already competed in the youth field for Germany at world championships and therefore a change was not an option. So he was only allowed to start for Germany. In July 2010, Haussler gave up his German citizenship. As a result, he was able to start at world championships for his native Australia in the future.

On the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse 2013 he suffered a broken pelvis and hip in a mass fall.

At the beginning of 2015, Haussler won the Australian road racing championship. He won the sprint of a top group of seven.
