prolog

British rail specialist Bradley Wiggins won the 4.2 kilometer long prologue in Grenoble with one second ahead of American Levi Leipheimer and two seconds ahead of Kazakhs Andrei Kaschetschkin .

1st stage

The first stage was shaped for a long time by the runaway duo Nicolas Portal and Rémi Pauriol , who had separated on the descent from Col de Parménie . However, they could not defend their maximum lead of 9:35 minutes, because the Équipe Cofidis and later Quick Step-Innergetic accelerated the pace in the main field. Her escape attempt ended nine kilometers from the finish. In the subsequent mass sprint, the German Heinrich Haussler duped the world's sprinter elite by relegating Tom Boonen to second and Graeme Brown to third.

Bradley Wiggins defended the overall leader's jersey.

2nd stage

Early on in the race, some drivers tried to break away, which did not succeed. Only after 35 kilometers of racing did Aljaksandr Kuschynski and Jérôme Pineau break away, with a maximum advantage of 5:20 minutes.

Forty kilometers before the finish, the climb to the Côte de Saint-Romain-les-Atheux followed . There Preben van Hecke attacked first , but could not follow Kevin Seeldraeyers' counterattack . A little later, Seeldraeyers was joined by Christophe Moreau and José Antonio Redondo , who joined the lead duo as a trio 30 kilometers from the finish line. Pineau and Kuschynski could soon no longer follow the pace of their three companions and Seeldraeyers broke the chain of his bike seven kilometers from the finish. In the end, the other two drivers managed to save 33 seconds ahead of the main field, where Moreau defeated Redondo in a sprint. Alejandro Valverde won the sprint of the field and came in third. In the overall standings, Moreau took over the yellow lead jersey with a seven-second lead over Redondo.

3rd stage

The Kazakh Alexander Vinokurow won the almost 41-kilometer individual time trial around Anneyron . He won with 9 seconds ahead of his compatriot and teammate Andrei Kaschetschkin . Vinokourov thus also took the lead in the overall standings.

4th stage

The largely flat section before the more than 20 kilometer climb to the 1,909 meter high finish on the Mont Ventoux had Sylvain Calzati , Cedric Vasseur , Frederik Willems and Stephane Auge dominated. The quartet was at times more than ten minutes in front of the field before it fell apart on the final climb. The Frenchman Calzati stayed at the top for the longest time, until he was overtaken by his team-mate Moreau and Poland's Sylwester Szmyd . The veteran Moreau left Szmyd a good three kilometers from the summit and was able to celebrate his second success of the day after his victory in Saint-Étienne . The co-favorites Alexander Vinokurow and Alejandro Valverde suffered a slump on the last climb and crossed the finish line a long way behind Moreau. Andrei Kaschetschkin took the lead in the overall standings.

5th stage

The 5th section was determined from the start by a leading group of 22 drivers. a. Alexander Vinokurow , Heinrich Haussler and Tom Boonen belonged. On the undulating route with a total of 4 mountain ratings, the group quickly gained a lead of over 6 minutes over the main field. On the last mountain classification of the day to the Col du Corobin , the group finally disintegrated. First of all, Astana professional Antonio Colom was able to pull away , shortly afterwards he was followed by his teammate Vinokurow. The two were able to keep their pursuers at a distance and together they reached the goal, where Vinokourov gave Colom the victory.

Andrei Kaschetschkin was able to defend his overall lead despite being more than 3 minutes behind Vinokurow. There were no changes in the other ratings either.

6th stage

This year's “Queen's Stage” with a total of seven mountain ratings, including the 2067 meter high Col de la Croix de Fer , was dominated for a long time by a top group of eleven. Among them were Maxim Iglinski , Rémy Di Gregorio and Bernhard Kohl . On the last ascent to Col du Télégraphe , Iglinski, Di Grégorio and Alexander Botscharow were able to break away from the group. Finally, Iglinski managed to leave his two colleagues behind and to book the third day win for the Astana team .

However, the preliminary decision in the overall standings fell in the chasing group around the leader Andrei Kaschetschkin . Cadel Evans , Christophe Moreau and Leonardo Piepoli broke away from the group on the final climb and were able to leave Kaschetschkin behind for almost two minutes. So Moreau took over the yellow jersey and on the final stage only has to fear Cadel Evans, who is only 14 seconds behind him.

7th stage

On the final stage, a leading group around Egoi Martínez and Fabian Wegmann determined the racing for a long time . It was not until the last mountain classification at Col de la Forclaz that the favorites for the overall victory began. First Alberto Contador attacked , then alternately Leonardo Piepoli , Cadel Evans and Levi Leipheimer . The overall leader Christophe Moreau was able to counter every attack and finally secure the overall victory.

The stage was won by Alexander Vinokurow , who took advantage of a Leipheimer fall a few kilometers from the finish and was able to overtake the American. Vinokurow thus also secured the jersey of the best in points. The mountain classification was won by Rémy Di Gregorio , the combined classification went to Christophe Moreau, and the team classification was won by Team Astana .
