Egoi Martínez de Esteban (born May 15, 1978 in Etxarri / Basque Country ) is a former Spanish cyclist .

Career

After Martinez won the Vuelta Ciclista a León in 2001 and finished second in the Vuelta a Navarra , he was signed by the Basque UCI ProTeam Euskaltel-Euskadi in 2002 , where he drove until the 2005 season. In your first year there, he won the overall ranking of the Tour de l'Avenir .

In the following years Martinez participated nine times in the Tour de France , eight times in the Vuelta a España and once in the Giro d'Italia . He achieved his best results on the Tour of Spain: in 2006 he won the mountainous eleventh stage as a member of the Discovery Channel team after attacking from a leading group around his former team-mate Iñigo Landaluze . He also won the mountain classification and was twelfth overall. In 2009 , on the ninth stage, he was the first driver in the history of the Euskaltel-Euskadi team , which he has been driving again since this season, to take over the gold jersey of the overall leader by being part of a top group of twelve with a lead of 6:42 Minutes drove out. He was able to defend the overall lead for four days and finished ninth in the overall standings.
