The 61st Vuelta a España took place from August 26th to September 17th, 2006 . On the 21 stages, the drivers had to cover a total distance of 3,212.7 km. The Pyrenees were not part of the tour in this edition . There were a total of five mountain arrivals.
The 20 UCI ProTeams were entitled to start . In addition, the Professional Continental Team Relax-GAM Fuenlabrada received a wildcard .
doping
In the run-up to the tour, on July 28, both the Comunidad Valenciana team involved in the Fuentes doping scandal and Ivan Basso , Jan Ullrich and Francisco Mancebo , who were suspected of doping, were unloaded.
One day before the start of the tour, the Saunier Duval-Prodir team banned its driver Koldo Gil from the team, as he was allegedly also involved in the Fuentes doping scandal .
course
After the first few days were dominated by the sprinters and time trial drivers, the overall ranking after the first week was not very meaningful. In the team time trial , Carlos Sastre had secured the gold jersey and was at the top at the same time as his eight team-mates. The following day, Thor Hushovd took the lead by finishing second in the mass sprint.
Only on the fifth stage, which ended with a mountain finish, did the overall classification change. Danilo Di Luca , who won the mountain finish in La Covatilla , secured the lead for the next two days, but then gave it to the surprisingly triumphant Janez Brajkovič after the 7th stage, another mountain finish . He lost the jersey on the 9th stage to Alejandro Valverde , who only had to admit defeat to Alexander Vinokurov that day .
The next stage was then shaped by outlier groups. Sérgio Paulinho , Egoi Martínez and Luca Paolini secured victories. The stage to Cuenca chose Samuel Sánchez for themselves. Valverde also defended his leader jersey beyond the first individual time trial , which David Millar won wafer-thinly ahead of Fabian Cancellara . The royal stage to the Calar Alto observatory surprisingly decided the young Igor Antón in his favor, as he benefited from the fact that the favorites were watching each other. The following day the leadership changed again.
After a terrific ride, Alexander Vinokurov, who got better and better during the tour, took the lead. This impression was also confirmed on the following stage, where Vinokurov was again able to leave Valverde behind and let his team-mate Andrei Kaschetschkin win. With the victory in the second individual time trial and the third overall in the course of the tour, Vinokurow underpinned his undisputed overall victory in the end. The final stage to Madrid was won by Erik Zabel , who secured his second win of the day.
