Luca Paolini (born January 17, 1977 in Milan ) is an Italian racing cyclist .
Athletic career
Paolini became a professional with the Mapei-Quickstep cycling team in 2000 and moved to Quick Step with team manager Patrick Lefevere , where he stayed until 2005. He is considered one of the best precious helpers of road cycling , with both his UCI teams, as well as with the Italian national road world championships . At the beginning of his career he was able to win the semi-classics Giro del Piemonte , Pfeil von Brabant and Coppa Placci as individual successes . At the UCI Road World Championships 2004 in Verona, third in the sprint of a leading group behind Óscar Freire and Erik Zabel . At the HEW Cyclassics , Paolini finished second behind his team-mate Filippo Pozzato in 2005 . His most successful year so far was 2013 when he won the classic Omloop Het Nieuwsblad , a fifth place in the cycling monument Milan-Sanremo and in his first participation in the Giro d'Italia, won the third stage as a soloist and won the pink jersey . In 2015 he blew up a six-man leading group with an attack near Gent – Wevelgem shortly before the finish and thereby won his first UCI WorldTour - one-day race .
During the Tour de France 2015 , Paolini tested positive for cocaine after the fourth stage and was immediately taken out of the race by his Katusha team . In December 2015, in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport , he stated that he was addicted to sleeping pills and cocaine. After his brother died ten years ago, he began to take sleeping pills regularly. After his suspension in the summer, he went to a rehab clinic. The incident during the tour was a "wake-up call" and initiated a turning point in his life. His case is still pending with the Anti-Doping Commission of the World Cycling Federation UCI ; Paolini is still suspended. In April 2016, the UCI announced that Paolini had been banned for 18 months until January 6, 2017.
Paolini then initially announced his resignation, but returned to active sport as a mountain biker after his suspension had expired .

In 2016 an asteroid was named after him: (42697) Lucapaolini .
