The 56th Vuelta a España was from September 8 until the thirtieth September 2001 discharged. There were a total of 21 stages including three time trials, one mountain time trial and 6 mountain arrivals. The tour started in Salamanca and traditionally ended in Madrid after 3,008.6 kilometers . There were five winners of the overall leader's gold jersey. It was only during the last stage, the individual time trial in Madrid, that Ángel Luis Casero took the lead in the overall standings. The Spaniard won this tour for the first time in his career .
