Nicolas Portal (born April 23, 1979 in Auch , France ; † March 3, 2020 in Andorra la Vella ) was a French sports director and racing cyclist .

Career

2001 drove Portal at AG2R Prévoyance as a trainee and was awarded the following year there a professional contract. With this team he achieved his greatest career success with a stage win at the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2004. From 2006 to 2009 he drove for the Spanish ProTeam Caisse d'Epargne . Portal took part in the Tour de France six times , which he was able to finish each time.

At the end of the 2010 season he ended his career as a professional cyclist due to heart problems and then became sports director at Team Sky , for which he had ridden in his last season. In this role he was involved in the tour victories of Chris Froome in 2013 , 2015 and 2016 and 2017 as well as in the tour victories of Geraint Thomas in 2018 and Egan Bernal in 2019 .

In March 2020, Portal died of a heart attack at the age of 40 .
