The 71st Tour de Suisse took place from June 16 to 24, 2007. The stage race consisted of a total of nine stages, including two individual time trials, one of which was held at the beginning of the tour as a prologue and a longer one took place on the final day. The route with a planned total length of 1,255.6 kilometers had a total of four mountain arrivals. By shortening the sixth stage because the Nufenen Pass was not crossed, the total distance of the tour was reduced to 1,160.1 kilometers. However, the number of mountain arrivals did not change by keeping the destination Crans-Montana on the sixth stage.

The tour started in Olten and ended in Bern .

Participating teams

The 20 ProTour teams and the Austrian Professional Continental Team Team Volksbank took part in the tour.

1st stage (prologue)

Local time trial world champion Fabian Cancellara clearly won the 3.8-kilometer prologue on the street circuit in Olten , eight seconds ahead of Daniele Bennati and another one over José Iván Gutiérrez . Cancellara needed 4:20 minutes for the course and, like Bennati and Gutiérrez, stayed below the 4:30 mark.

For a long time, the Swiss Beat Zberg from the Gerolsteiner team held the fastest time with 4:33 minutes. Then Stuart O'Grady took the lead with a time of 4:30 minutes before he was replaced by Bennati. As the best German, Stefan Schumacher finished ninth, Tour de France favorite Andreas Klöden came in 13th.

In the overall standings and points classification, Fabian Cancellara took first place after his victory. The CSC team led in the team competition.

2nd stage

The second part of the day was shaped for a long time by Pascal Hungerbühler , who had withdrawn from the field as a soloist and had a maximum lead of around five minutes on the field. The attempt to escape ended 20 kilometers from the finish in Lucerne due to the demanding course of the shot with two mountain ratings .

There there was a mass sprint of the field, which was overshadowed by a fall about 500 meters from the finish. In a wafer-thin finish, Erik Zabel won ahead of Daniele Bennati and Fabian Cancellara , who defended the lead in the overall standings.

3rd stage

On the longest section of the tour at 228.7 kilometers, a breakaway trio led by Daniel Navarro , Luis Pasamontes and Alessandro Proni pulled away from the field after 18 kilometers . At times the three drivers had a maximum lead of over eleven minutes on the main field. After they had cycled over the first mountain classification of the day, the Flüelapass , the lead shrank rapidly due to the speed work of Team CSC and Lampre-Fondital . On the last climb of the day Proni decided to attack. His two comrades-in-arms could not follow him and were soon overtaken by the group of favorites. In the end, Proni saved seven seconds on the chasing group and won his first ProTour race ahead of Xavier Florencio and Kim Kirchen .

Fabian Cancellara defended the leader's jersey with a two-second lead over stage winner Proni.

4th stage

The fourth stage with a mountain arrival in Malbun in the Liechtenstein municipality of Triesenberg was, as on the previous day, initially determined by outliers. Kevin De Weert and Arkaitz Durán had broken away from the field and were now more than ten minutes ahead of the main field. However, the escape ended 20 kilometers from the destination, which was mainly due to the speed work of the T-Mobile team .

In the final climb to Malbun, overall leader Fabian Cancellara lost contact with the group of favorites ten kilometers before the stage finish, from which his team-mate Fränk Schleck had separated seven kilometers from the finish line . He single-handedly secured the day's victory with a 32-second lead over Vladimir Jefimkin .

Schleck took over the overall leader's gold jersey due to the day's success.

5th stage

The fifth section after Giubiasco was determined by the Dutch Laurens ten Dam for a long time . On his almost four-hour escape, he had in the meantime gained a maximum lead of ten minutes, but the increased pace of the sprinter teams meant that his attempt to escape ended ten kilometers from the finish. From the mass sprint of the field, Robbie McEwen won the stage ahead of Daniele Bennati and Erik Zabel .

Fränk Schleck kept the lead in the overall standings.

6th stage

The sixth stage was canceled in the morning shortly after the start in Giubiasco due to heavy rain and hail showers. After an interruption, the tour management agreed with the teams not to cross the "roof of the tour", the Nufenen Pass . The stage was officially started in Ulrichen in the afternoon . The stage length was 95 kilometers, with the stage destination remaining in Crans-Montana .

After the restart, Víctor Hugo Peña and René Weissinger pulled away from the main field. The two outliers were only able to extend their lead to just under 3 minutes. In the field, the speed was controlled by Team CSC , so that the decision about the day's victory should be made on the final climb to Crans-Montana. Peña and Weissinger were caught up again 13 kilometers from the finish. On the climb, David López and Gerrit Glomser were able to break away from the group of around 20 drivers around the overall leader, Fränk Schleck . Little by little the chasing group broke up - some drivers, including Thomas Dekker , Gilberto Simoni and Damiano Cunego, were able to catch up with the leaders again, while Schleck fell back. At the mountain classification one kilometer before the finish, Thomas Dekker finally used a moment of the carelessness of the other drivers, pulled away and was able to book the stage victory.

In the overall standings, Wladimir Jefimkin was able to take over the golden jersey from Fränk Schleck, as he lost over a minute to Jefimkin on the final climb.

7th stage

The “king's stage” of the Tour de Suisse 2007 with two mountain ratings in the highest category and the mountain finish on the Grimsel Pass was marked by many attempts to escape. The field quickly split into several groups at the beginning of the first climb. A top group of nine with Andreas Klöden , Wladimir Gussew and Marzio Bruseghin was able to pull out a lead of around four minutes over the field with overall leader Vladimir Jefimkin up to the second mountain classification .

On the descent, Martin Elmiger managed to break away from the leading group, followed by Vladimir Gussew and Beat Zberg . The group was able to quickly extend its lead over the pursuers around Klöden to over a minute. Finally, Gusev launched an attack that his two comrades-in-arms could no longer follow. The gap between the chasing group and Gusev quickly increased to two minutes. Only the American Chris Horner tried to catch up with Gussew. However, he did not succeed in doing this and so Gusew was able to secure the day's victory. Horner reached the finish line 2:02 minutes behind, while Andreas Klöden's group arrived 35 seconds later.

Vladimir Jefimkin was able to defend his lead in the overall standings despite being 4:15 minutes behind.

8th stage

The hilly stage began with numerous escape attempts, all of which were quickly over. A group of eleven drivers, including Florian Stalder and Enrico Poitschke , was only able to pull away after 70 kilometers . They were able to gain a maximum lead of three minutes on the peloton. 28 kilometers before the stage finish, the Schwarzsee in the canton of Friborg , Stalder won one of the two sprint classifications and finally secured the jersey of the best sprinter. On the climb to the first mountain classification of the day, Carlos Sastre and Alessandro Ballan pulled away from the group, while the rest of the leading group was caught up again by the chasing field. After the mountain classification, Ballan also dropped back. Sastre managed to stay in the lead nine kilometers from the finish until the last sprint classification, then he was caught up again.

When everyone was expecting a sprint decision, Rigoberto Urán launched an attack on the last kilometer. Since no other driver reacted, he was able to secure the day's victory from Cristian Moreni and Andreas Klöden .

There were no changes in the individual ratings.

9th stage

The final individual time trial , like the prologue, was dominated by the reigning time trial world champion and local hero Fabian Cancellara , who was able to confidently secure his second victory of the day. Only the German Andreas Klöden was able to stand up to the Swiss face up to the first split time. At the end of the day he finished second, 20 seconds behind, and secured his third podium in a row. The German-speaking podium was completed by Stefan Schumacher , who finished third, 33 seconds behind.

In the fight for the overall standings, Vladimir Karpez , who was third before the stage, clearly distanced his opponents Kim Kirchen and Wladimir Jefimkin . In the end, Karpez secured the tour victory with over a minute ahead of Kirchen. The Belgian Stijn Devolder took third place on the podium . Jefimkin, who lost over two minutes to his compatriot Karpez, had to be content with sixth place in the final ranking.
