The 51st Tour de Suisse took place from June 16 to 25, 1987. It was held in ten stages and a prologue over a distance of 1699 kilometers.

The overall winner was the American Andrew Hampsten . The tour started in Affoltern am Albis with 132 drivers, 90 of whom finished in Zurich on the last day .

In the penultimate stage from Scuol to Laax, Peter Winnen had a seven-second lead over Andrew Hampsten on the final climb, which brought the Dutchman up to one second in the overall standings. In the end, the overall victory went to Hampsten with a second. This was the Tour de Suisse's second tightest decision since 1941 .
