The 23rd Tour de Suisse took place from June 12th to 18th, 1959. It led over seven stages and a total distance of 1317 kilometers.

The overall winner was the German Hennes Junkermann . The tour started in Zurich with 61 drivers, 36 of whom made it to the finish - also in Zurich.

On the first stage, Swiss Rolf Graf , Tour de Suisse winner from 1956, drove as if unleashed, and only Junkermann could keep up with him. The day after, however, Junkermann was able to take over from Graf in leading the tour when he received a 30 second time bonus in pouring rain in Wetzikon . He did not give up this leadership until the goal. The fourth, the “Lukmanier-Oberalp-Etappe”, he finished second behind Antonio Uliana , but five minutes before the next chasing group. Graf, on the other hand, had to give up the race exhausted. Junkermann was the first German winner of the Tour de Suisse since Ludwig Geyer at the second edition in 1934 .
