The 43rd Tour de Suisse took place from June 13-22, 1979. It was held in eleven stages and a prologue over a distance of 1,622 kilometers.

The overall winner was the Belgian Wilfried Wesemael . The tour started in Zurich with 86 drivers, 66 of whom crossed the finish line in Hendschiken on the last day . The two Swiss drivers Erwin Lienhard and Beat Breu were relegated from 3rd and 10th place to 11th and 27th overall in the individual ranking because of doping . 66 drivers reached the destination of the tour.
