Verbier in winter
Verbier is located about 10 km east of Martigny on the eastern side of the Dranse de Bagnes valley in a wide basin on a terrace. In the north, the municipal boundary runs over the mountain range from the Pierre Avoi over the pass crossings Col de la Marlene and Croix de Coeur to the Tête des Etablons, in the east from the pass Col des Mines to Mont Gelé to Mont Fort and on to the massif of the Rosablanche . From the valley in Le Châble , the main road 205 coming from Sembrancher overcomes the more than 650 meters difference in altitude with 13 hairpin bends to the center of Verbier ( ). The whole settlement extends over an altitude of about to .
The old village of Verbier Village is below the holiday station on the mountainside.
The medieval castle of Verbier was situated on a promontory below the Pierre Avoi.
There are extensive alpine areas above the original village of Verbier: La Marlénaz, Les Grand-Plans, Le Vacheret, La Chaux. Since the Middle Ages, an artificial aqueduct has led part of the streams below the Glacier de La Chaux through the alpine meadows from Verbier to Levron in the municipality of Vollèges . In the second half of the 20th century, the alpine areas of Bagnes were redeveloped by amalgamating properties. In the towns of Verbier and Médières there is a joint cattle breeding cooperative and, since 1960, the Verbier central dairy.
In 1937 the Société de Développement de Verbier was set up to manage the expansion of the tourist resort in the agricultural area of Verbier.
As of December 31, 2014, Verbier had 3,296 inhabitants and more than 25,000 beds for guests. The place is part of the 4 Vallées winter sports area, which includes Verbier, Nendaz , La Tzoumaz , Veysonnaz , Thyon , Les Collons , Les Masses and Bruson . Located in the Val de Bagnes , Verbier is considered one of the first “ off-piste ” areas in the Alps . The highest point of the winter sports area is Mont Fort ( ), southeast of Verbier, making it the third highest winter sports area in Switzerland (after Zermatt and Saas-Fee ). The noticeable, extremely strong increase in hotels and residential buildings in the Verbier area has repeatedly led to discussions about the sustainable development of infrastructures for tourism and about official building supervision since the middle of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century.
The La Tzoumaz-Savoleyres ski area is located between Verbier and Riddes .
Below the Mont-Fort, the SAC Jaman section has built the Cabane du Mont-Fort mountain hut . On the western flank of the Bec des Rosses , the mountain hiking trail Sentier des Chamois leads from La Chaux over the Col Termin to the Alp Louvie and to Fionnay .
Verbier is often the venue for sporting competitions, such as the Alpine Skiing World Cup for women in 1983 and 1984 , the Paragliding World Championship in 1993 and the 20th Alpine Skiing Junior World Championship in 2001 . In 2005 Verbier was a stage of the Tour de Suisse . Since 2005 there has been a regular Speed Ski World Cup run on the slope of Mont Fort in Verbier .
The Verbier Horse Show has been a CSI competition since 2012 .
The Verbier Bike Festival is held every September .
The Patrouille des Glaciers leads to Verbier .
A road from the valley to the village of Verbier-Village has existed since 1936 and from there to the terrace with the early tourist facilities since 1949. In 1950, the first chairlift was built in the health resort to the hill near Les Ruinettes. The cable car from the valley town of Le Châble , which has been accessible by rail since 1953, to Verbier began operating in 1975.
Since 1994 there has been a regular summer classical music festival in Verbier, the Verbier Festival . Established classical musicians and young talents come together for workshops over 17 days. There are also daily free concerts in different locations.
