La Tzoumaz in summer, view of the Rhone Valley

The village of La Tzoumaz belongs to the political municipality of Riddes in the Swiss canton of Valais .

The resort is located between Martigny and Sion (Sion) high above the left bank of the Rhone at an altitude of around 1500  m above sea level. M. The former name Mayens-de-Riddes , Maiensäss von Riddes, indicates the original use of the Alpine settlement, namely the summer grazing of the cattle. Herds of the Eringers , the typical Valais fighting cow breed , can still be seen today.

The village now has 200 inhabitants and was connected to the Verbier ski area with lifts and slopes in the 1960s. Today La Tzoumaz is connected to the 4 Vallées (4 valleys) ski area with the ski resorts of Verbier , Nendaz , Thyon and Veysonnaz .

The 8-person gondola lift, which opened in 2008, takes seven minutes to reach the Savoleyres mountain ridge ( 2354  m above sea level ), which makes the transition to Verbier.

First a few larger apartment houses were built in the village, then more and more free-standing chalets . These shape the place today and transformed the former alpine meadows into loosened chalet settlements. The advantage of La Tzoumaz as a ski resort is the comparatively very good snow situation thanks to its north orientation and the wide view over the Rhone Valley to the Bernese Alps. Thanks to the terraced hillside location, most of the accommodations have an unobstructed view. An attraction for families is the 10 km long toboggan run, one of the longest in Switzerland, which can be reached by gondola. There are also several snowshoe routes.

The ski slopes are varied and lead back up to 7 km from Savoleyres to the village. In addition, a secured but unprepared alpine ski route leads from Les Attelas ( 2727  m above sea level ) above Verbier through the undeveloped Vallon d'Arbi with an altitude difference of over 1200 m to La Tzoumaz.

In summer there are numerous hiking and mountain bike trails, as well as the “path of the senses” (sentier des sens). There is a public indoor swimming pool with a sauna and an open-air natural ice rink in the village.

Raclette chassoure, spicy dried meat , rye bread and Valais apricots are part of the local culinary traditions. La Tzoumaz is located above Riddes. This place is also famous for its vineyards. The most common varieties are Fendant , Johannisberg , Petite Arvine , Amigne , Pagan, Humagne , Dôle , Pinot noir and Cornalin .

The place lives mainly from tourism .
