List of grape varieties

The Johannisberg (short: Johannis ), or the Sylvaner des Wallis , is a Valais AOC -certified white wine, which comes from the grape variety Sylvaner ( French Rhin ). Ripe a little later than Fendant , Johannisberg is the second most important white wine variety in the canton of Valais, the largest wine region in Switzerland, after Fendant . It is also regarded as a traditional grape variety in Valais, to which the name Walliser Grand Cru is reserved. The term "Johannisberg" together with the name "AOC Wallis" is considered to be " Johannisberg du Valais ".

Origin and name

The Johannisberg came from Germany from the Johannisberg area to the Valais in the middle of the 19th century , hence the name "Johannisberg", which has been a protected name in the Valais since 1966. The name “Johannisberg”, like “Fendant”, is only used in the Swiss canton of Valais to denote a traditional white wine.

Wine region

The growing areas of the Johannisberg are precisely defined by the Valais legislation. In order to bring its qualities to full advantage, it is grown on top locations on the middle slope of the Swiss Rhone Valley , where it can develop its entire fine, full-bodied personality with strong aromas. The yield limits per unit area are set at one kilo per m 2 .

properties

The Johannisbergrebe has a pale yellowish-green shoot and round leaves. The medium-sized grapes are compact and have round, green, brown-speckled berries.

expansion

When expanding the Johannisberg, it is important not to influence the cool fermentation process by controlling the fermentation temperatures too much. On the other hand, it must be ensured that only first-class, very gently cellared must is used and that the wine is carefully cared for after fermentation, according to its needs.

Tasting

The Johannisberg is one of the top-class wines, with the typical Johannisberg having a mild taste, with little acidity and a small bitter note in the finale.

Depending on the vintage, it is dry or slightly sweet. It is advisable to drink the dry Johannisberg within two to three years, while the noble sweet Johannisberg of Spätlese can be stored for several years, even two to three decades.

Due to the light slate or gravel soils of the Swiss Rhone Valley, the Johannisberg is characterized by nuances of herbal tea and a seductive background of muscular fruit and almond aromas. On the palate it offers a beautiful full-bodied vinosity as well as a substantial oily sensuality.

Serve

Valais cheese, saffron and asparagus dishes go well with the white gold of this dry Valais. It also goes well with an aperitif, with fish (smoked fish, fish terrines, etc.), dishes with creamy sauce such as mushrooms and white meat such as poultry. Slightly sweet, it is a delicious dessert wine.
