Hendschiken ( Swiss German : ˈhænːtʃikχə ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Lenzburg district and is located in the lower Bünztal , two kilometers east of the district capital ( Lenzburg ).

geography

The village is about two hundred meters west of the Bünz in a plain that was previously largely swampy and drained at the beginning of the 20th century. The Lütisbuech ( 538  m above sea level ) and the Rain ( 519  m above sea level ), two foothills of the Rietenberg, which forms the natural border with the Seetal , rise at the western boundary of the municipality . In addition to the actual village, there are three districts that have a completely different character. In the west, at the transition from Rain to the terminal moraine of Othmarsingen , is the Horner industrial area. Büel is an agricultural hamlet on a plateau on the eastern slope of the Lütisbuech. Steinacker on the east bank of the Bünz is a modern single-family housing estate.

The area of the municipality is 352 hectares , of which 87 hectares are forested and 63 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 535 meters not far from the summit of the Lütisbuech, the lowest at 398 meters on the Bünz. Neighboring communities are Othmarsingen in the north, Dottikon in the east, Villmergen in the southeast, Dintikon and Ammerswil in the south and Lenzburg in the west.

history

In 1921 and 1933 remains of a Roman aqueduct were discovered that supplied the vicus Lindfeld near Lenzburg with water. Hentschikon was first mentioned in a document in 1160 in the Acta Murensia of the Muri monastery . The place name comes from the Old High German "Hanzinghofun" and means "at the farms of the Hanzo clan".

In the Middle Ages, the property was fragmented and belonged to numerous ecclesiastical and secular lords, including the monasteries Muri, Säckingen and St. Urban as well as the lords of Hallwyl , the counts of Lenzburg and the counts of Habsburg . Large parts of it passed to the Habsburg house monastery in Königsfelden in the 14th century . The Habsburgs were in 1273 after the extinction of the Counts of Kyburg the blood jurisdiction , while the lower courts for more than five hundred years went to the Hallwyler. In terms of church, Hendschiken belonged to the parish of Staufberg on the hill of the same name .

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Hendschiken now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Berner Aargau . The village formed its own judicial district in the Lenzburg office and had the right to choose his successor after the death of the subordinate. In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation . In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Hendschiken has been part of the canton of Aargau since then.

The straw weaving and cotton weaving led in the 18th and 19th centuries, a first economic boom. On June 23, 1874 the railway line Rupperswil - Wohlen of the Aargau Southern Railway was opened, the branch line to Brugg followed on June 1, 1882. This favored the establishment of numerous small businesses. In the second half of the 20th century, an industrial area was built near the train station. The development of the population was always subject to strong cyclical fluctuations, but generally showed slight growth. It has almost doubled since the early 1980s.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In blue, left inside-sighted yellow glove." The coat of arms with the glove (Swiss German: Händsche) has existed since at least 1621 and belonged to the non-noble family von Hendschiken, who were in the service of Beromünster Abbey . The Hendschiken community seal created in 1811 shows a glove that is visible from the outside. In 1954 the municipality reintroduced the older variant.
