Emil Maurer (born January 1, 1917 in Zofingen ; died January 14, 2011 in Zollikerberg ) was a Swiss art historian .

Emil Maurer studied art history, German literature and classical archeology at the Universities of Basel and Zurich and in 1948 at the Sorbonne in Paris . In Basel , he was with the work in 1949 Jacob Burckhardt and Rubens doctorate . From 1948 he worked in the preservation of monuments in the canton of Aargau and prepared the third volume of the art monuments of the canton of Aargau for Die Kunstdenkmäler der Schweiz , which was dedicated to the Königsfelden monastery in 1954 .

In 1956 he completed his habilitation at the University of Basel, where he worked as a private lecturer in addition to his other monument preservation activities . In 1963 the Society for Swiss Art History appointed him director of its most important publication, the Swiss Art Monuments. In 1964, the University of Bern appointed him to a vacant extraordinary professorship, which he took up in the summer semester of 1965. In 1966, however, Emil Maurer accepted the appointment to the professorship for modern art history at the University of Zurich, where he succeeded Gotthard Jedlicka, who died in 1965 . He worked here until his retirement in 1982.

Based on his preoccupation with Jacob Burckhardt , Emil Maurer questioned the linearity of current representations of the history of style . His main research interests included the painting of Italy and the Dutch from the 15th to 17th centuries, with particular attention being paid to the phenomenon of Mannerism - for example in Jacopo da Pontormo , Rosso Fiorentino or Parmigianino . On the other hand, he dealt extensively with the French painting of impressionism and post-impressionism .
