geography

Vines on the Staufberg

The Staufberg is an approximately elliptical hill 550 meters long and 450 meters wide. Being at 516.7  m above sea level. M. lying summit is flattened and part of a 180 × 50 meter plateau. Despite its relatively low height, the Staufberg is a striking elevation, as it is almost 100 meters above the surrounding, on average 420  m above sea level. M. high level of the lower Seetal rises up. The development of Staufen surrounds the hill in the north, east and south, while open fields lie in the west. Only on the south side are some houses built on the slope. The slopes in the east, north and west are covered with mixed forest, the southern slope has scattered trees, meadows and a vineyard .

From a geological point of view, the Staufberg is - similar to the Lenzburger Schlossberg , two kilometers to the east - an erosion residue . In several ice ages (with the exception of the last Würm Ice Age ) the growing and then shrinking glaciers formed a gravel plain . In doing so, they also reduced the size of the previously existing sandstone slab and left only a few remains. The sandstone was transformed into molasses by the penetration of lime and silica-containing water .

Viticulture

Viticulture is practiced on the southern slope of the Staufberg . In 1688, the city of Bern, Bailiff Christoph Steiger , granted the first permission to do so. The quality of the wine obtained here stood out from the wines of the area. Around 1900 powdery mildew and phylloxera hit the vines heavily. However, their clearing in 1911 was primarily for economic reasons: The Hero jam factory in Lenzburg paid significantly more for currants and quinces than the income from viticulture. Only in 1990 were vines planted again. The vineyards at an altitude between 450 and 490  m above sea level. Today M. is 23.47 ares in size. The red grape varieties Regent , Léon Millot and Maréchal Foch as well as the white grape varieties Seyval Blanc and Bianca are grown . The southern slope is a nature reserve of cantonal importance, which is why it is managed according to biological criteria .

Events

The early modern architecture of the Staufberg church district forms an ideal setting for cultural events with historical reference. For example, an open-air theater was staged in 2009 ; the play was about the burglar and thief Bernhard Matter , whose execution was the last in the canton of Aargau. In 2013, the open-air theater VATTO der Zeitwanderer was staged . After historical events around the year 400 AD, it tells the life story of Vatto, a Helvetic general who was trained by the Romans and who has the vision of building the first church on the Staufberg.

The Staufberglauf has been held every year since 1988. At this running sport event , the Staufberg is circled on a two-kilometer route that has to be tackled several times depending on the category.

The New Year's Eve fire is an old custom. In the last week of the year, the young people who attend the last grade of elementary school erect a high wooden frame on the Staufberg. On the morning of December 31, the school children in the village collect the dry Christmas trees, waves of rice and bales of straw. The material is carried up the hill and piled on the scaffolding. At midnight, the New Year's Eve fire is lit in front of many onlookers when the bells of the Staufberg Church strike.
