Seyval Blanc

Seyval Blanc is a white wine variety from 1919 that is very suitable for cool climates. The early ripening, high-yielding and fungus-resistant variety is therefore cultivated in northern France , England (since 2002 the most common variety before Müller-Thurgau ) and in Switzerland (7.2 hectares, as of 2007). Due to its winter hardiness, the grape variety is grown particularly in Canada and the eastern United States . Seyval Blanc produces a clean, dry, somewhat neutral wine with fruity notes and, along with Villard Blanc, is one of the most successful varieties of the Seyve-Villard vineyard in Saint-Vallier on the Drôme in the Rhone Valley . The breed was run by Bertille Seyve (1864–1939) and his father-in-law and partner Victor Villard.

It is a cross between the two Seibel vines S 5656 × S 4986. Since this is a hybrid vine , it is not approved for quality wines according to EU regulations. According to a decree of April 18, 2008, the grape variety is again one of the officially approved grape varieties for commercial cultivation, as the genome of the plant contains parts of the noble grape Vitis vinifera . Valentin Blattner used the variety as a cross partner of the Birstaler Muscat and Réselle varieties . It also found its way into the new varieties Merzling , Cayuga White , Chardonel , Melody , La Crosse , St. Croix and St. Pepin .

The vine is often found as a table grape in private gardens, as it can be grown well as an espalier fruit.
