Valentin Blattner (born August 5, 1958 ) is a Swiss grape breeder and winemaker . He has made a name for himself primarily with fungus-resistant varieties (PiWi) , but also against diseases of all kinds. Many grape varieties established today, such as Birstaler Muscat , Cabernet Blanc , Réselle , Pinotin , Satin Noir or Cabernet Jura , can be traced back to his breeding successes. All of these wines are listed in the Vitis International Variety Catalog .

Life and work

As the son of a biology teacher, he studied agricultural economics and made his first experiences with a Swiss pesticide manufacturer in Africa in the early 1980s. He was dismissed there for discovering improper work at his employer. Thereupon he made attempts to start viticulture again in his homeland. In 1991 he was one of the pioneers in this field.

He has been working with PIWI International and the Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil research station for many years . Many of his grape varieties are not yet named and are traded as breeding numbers with his initials "VB", for example VB6-04 , which means the 6th floor in the fourth row.

He also runs a winery together with his wife Silvia in Soyhières in the Jura .
