The Masaryk Battalion was a largely Czechoslovak battalion of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War . It was named after Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk , a Czech philosopher, writer and the first President of Czechoslovakia. The Masaryk battalion was probably set up in March 1937 in Albacete , the central base and training camp of the International Brigades. The battalion became part of the 129th International Brigade. The first commander of the Masaryk battalion was Fritz Johne .
