List of grape varieties |
Satin Noir is a fungus-resistant red wine variety that was newly bred in 1991 by the Swiss vine grower Valentin Blattner . The variety was originally known under the name VB 91-26-29 , which is now a synonym. It is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and resistance partners. The selection took place in the Freytag nursery in the Neustadt / Lachen-Speyerdorf community in the Palatinate (Germany). After several years of trial evaluation, the grape variety was registered by Volker Freytag for plant variety protection in 2002 and for classification in 2010.
Satin Noir clearly shows its genetic relationship to Cabernet Sauvignon with its loose grape structure. Under a thick skin, which shows good resistance to botrytis ( gray mold rot ), there is concentrated aromatic and strongly colored fruit pulp. Usually the wines mature 10 days before the parent Cabernet Sauvignon. Even after the aging process , the wines are deep red in color and have a harmonious maturity. With aromas of ripe, black blackberries and currants, black pepper and dark chocolate with hints of cigar, leather and cedar wood, the finished wine is close to a very ripe Cabernet Franc .
Ampelographic varietal characteristics
In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:
- The growth is very upright and rather weak, which only leads to a little effort in the canopy work. The loose leaf wall ensures good ventilation of the grape zone without additional defoliation, especially in damp regions. The time of ripening is around 10 to 14 days before Cabernet Sauvignon in early to mid-October. The harvest period can be extended due to the botrytis resistance.
- The grape variety is characterized by very good resistance to Oidium ( powdery mildew ), Botrytis and good resistance to downy mildew ( downy mildew ). Since budding is relatively late, there is little danger of late frosts. The vine is also relatively insensitive to winter frosts.
