Public reactions
For their voluntary commitment to laying the Stolpersteine, the members of the local working group Stolpersteine, pupils of the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Gardelegen, received the citizens' award of the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel in June 2018.
Shortly after the award ceremony, nine stumbling blocks in the city center, including the eight stones that had been freshly laid just a few days earlier, were forcibly broken out of the ground. The police were able to seize the stones removed with the help of a crowbar immediately after the crime and identify a suspect. A criminal complaint was filed against him for alleged desecration of the memorial symbols. Since then, the state security has determined whether the act was politically motivated. The city administration of Gardelegen does not assume any political background and has agreed to cover the costs of relocating the stolen stumbling blocks.
At the behest of the city administration, the nine stumbling blocks were put back into the pavement on July 17, 2018.
