List of stumbling blocks in Aschersleben

The list of stumbling blocks in Aschersleben contains all the stumbling blocks that were laid by Gunter Demnig in Aschersleben as part of the art project of the same name . They are intended to commemorate the victims of National Socialism who lived and worked in Aschersleben. Between 2008 and 2020, a total of 70 stones were laid at 16 addresses.

Adolf Conitzer came from Jeschewo . Together with Arthur Grünbaum, he ran a department store in Aschersleben. In 1942 he was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto and died there on February 1, 1943.

Bertha born Sternberg was married to Max Badt and had four children with him. One daughter died very young. One son moved to Berlin, another son and daughter emigrated to Palestine in the early 1930s. After the couple was no longer able to live in their hometown, they moved to live with their son in Berlin. In 1942 they were first deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto and later to a death camp. Bertha Badt was murdered on December 8, 1942.
On July 21, 2012, two stumbling blocks for the couple were laid in Berlin-Friedrichshain .

Max Badt (1856-1942)

Max Badt ran a leather goods store in Aschersleben. After a life in their hometown was no longer possible for him and his wife Bertha, they both moved to their son in Berlin. In 1942 they were first deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto and later to a death camp. Max Badt was murdered on November 16, 1942.
On July 21, 2012, two stumbling blocks for the couple were laid in Berlin-Friedrichshain.

Jun 10, 2011 Alice Crohn (1878-1944)

Alice born Samson was born in Bernburg and ran a department store with her husband Herman Crohn in Aschersleben. The couple had four daughters, including Käthe Hirsch née. Crohn and Lilli Silberberg b. Crohn. After the death of her husband, Alice Crohn ran the department store together with the married couple Feodor and Helene Hirsch. Alice Crohn and Käthe Hirsch were deported in 1942. Alice Crohn first ended up in the Theresienstadt ghetto. She was later transferred to Auschwitz concentration camp , where she was murdered on May 16, 1944. Käthe Hirsch and Lilli Silberberg did not survive the war either. Alice Crohn's other two daughters managed to escape to South Africa and Palestine .

Feodor Hirsch (1888–1970)

From 1941 Feodor Hirsch had to do forced labor in the Aschersleben city nursery. He stayed in hiding until Aschersleben was liberated by American troops. After the war he returned to his old job. In 2010 a stumbling block was laid for him, which was relocated on February 18, 2020 with corrected information.

Dora Gerson studied medicine and worked in Cologne as an assistant doctor and later in Dresden as a senior doctor. In 1935 her work permit was revoked. In 1941 she committed suicide.

Rudolf Gerson (1890–1938)

Rudolf Gerson served in World War I and then studied law. He was married and had a daughter. Until his dismissal in 1935, he worked as a district judge. In 1938 he was arrested and deported to Buchenwald concentration camp , where he was murdered after ten days in prison. His wife and daughter survived the war.

Luise Hagedorn b. Gerson served as a nurse during World War I. She was married to the bank clerk Fritz Hagedorn from Staßfurt and moved with him to Hanover . There she survived in hiding until the end of the war. She later moved to Nuremberg, where she died in 1975.

Hans-Gideon Hirschfeld was born in Berlin and attended the Stephaneum in Aschersleben . In 1935 he had to leave school early. With his parents and his younger sister he fled to Palestine via Trieste . Hans-Gideon Hirschfeld died there at a young age after a serious illness.

Else Bendix was born on October 13, 1882 in Halberstadt . The siblings Else and Hedwig Bendix came from Halberstadt in 1907 and last ran the corset and underwear specialty shop “Geschwister Bendix” at Taubenstrasse 4 from 1925 to 1938. After the aryanization of their business in November 1938, they went back to Halberstadt, where they last lived in a Jewish house in Westendorf 34a. On April 12, 1942, she was deported to the Warsaw ghetto.

Hedwig Bendix was born on November 4, 1885 in Halberstadt. In 1907 she moved to Aschersleben with her sister Else and ran a specialty laundry shop there, most recently from 1925 to 1938 at Taubenstrasse 4. After the "Aryanization" of their business in November 1938, they returned to Halberstadt, where they last worked in a Jewish house in Westendorf 34a lived. On April 12, 1942, she was deported to the Warsaw ghetto.

Edith Hahn studied law and came from Vienna . She ended up as a forced laborer in Aschersleben, where she had to work in the Bestehorn paper mill. She was able to evade the planned deportation and thus survived the war. She later worked as a judge in Brandenburg. When the KGB tried to get her to work as an informant, she fled to London . She spent most of her rest of life in Netanya , Israel , and returned to London in old age.
