Charles Cerné

Charles Cerné (born January 6, 1897 in Vienna ; † October 23, 1943 there ), born Carl Cerné, was an Austrian pianist and composer .

Life

Little is known about its origin. His musical career began as a violinist in the Vienna Volksoper Orchestra and as a répétiteur at the Volksoper. On December 22nd, 1916, Cerne was appointed concert master for piano at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, but left after two years at the end of the 1917/18 school year.

Between 1924 and 1931 Cerne was the piano partner of Váša Příhoda , with whom he recorded records and arranged works together. Later until his death he was Erna Sack's constant piano accompanist . In the 1936 film “Flowers from Nice” you can see Cerne on stage at the piano while Erna Sack sings the song “A bouquet of flowers from Nice” (music: Dénes Buday ). Since 1919 he has also performed as a piano accompanist for other singers and instrumentalists.

From 1935 until his death he lived in Vienna, Am Kohlmarkt 12.

Works

Compositions for violin and piano

These works were written primarily for concerts with Váša Příhoda .

In addition, around 20 transcriptions were made for the same line-up based on works by famous composers (including Mozart , Chopin , Schubert , Schumann ). Cerné said in an interview:

“Prihoda and I have jointly committed to deliver a series of arrangements of older concert pieces for a large German publisher every year, and I am allowed to divulge the secret: These arrangements are made in the railroad car [...] The brush prints of the notes that have already been engraved forwarded to us in the cities where we will be giving concerts and then the corrections will be made on the onward journey in the next sleeping car. "

Another ten of these transcriptions were published under Prihoda's name.
