List of grape varieties

The white grape variety Villard Blanc is a new breed from the Seyve-Villard vineyard. Along with Seyval Blanc, it is one of the company's commercially successful breeds. It is a cross between the two Seibel vines Seibel 6468 x Seibel 6905 and is therefore a hybrid vine .

In 1968 the area under vines in France was still 21,396 hectares . However, due to EU legislation that temporarily banned the cultivation of hybrid vines for quality wines, it was almost completely cleared. The current stocks of approx. 350 hectares (status 2007, source ONIVINS) are mainly used for the distillation of brandy . It is still cultivated today in Brazil (approx. 380 hectares), the USA (→ viticulture in New Jersey and viticulture in Pennsylvania ), Japan , Mexico , Hungary and in some of the former states of the USSR. According to a decree of April 18, 2008, the grape variety is again one of the officially approved grape varieties for commercial cultivation, since the genome of the plant contains parts of the noble grape Vitis vinifera .

The variety is resistant to phylloxera , but only produces a good yield in connection with suitable rootstocks . The variety is resistant to downy mildew , but is susceptible to powdery mildew . The late-ripening Villard Blanc produces pale yellow, alcoholic, slightly bitter wines that come close to a simple table wine in terms of quality.

Due to its characteristics, it was used as a partner in many new breeds by Gerhardt Alleweldt and Alfred Galibert . As a result of these breeding efforts, the varieties Bianca , Sirius , Phoenix , Orion , Staufer and Nero are mentioned as examples . The Sauvin grape variety was created by crossing Villard Blanc with Sauvignon Blanc.
