Gerhardt Alleweldt

Gerhardt Erich Alleweldt (born July 21, 1927 in Brightview, Canada ; † March 28, 2005 in Landau - Godramstein ) was an expert in the field of viticulture and breeder of new grape varieties .

Life

Gerhardt Alleweldt was the son of the naval officer Erich Alleweldt. From 1950 he studied agriculture at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen , graduated with a diploma in 1953 and received his doctorate in agriculture (Dr. agr. Sci.) In 1956 . He carried out the research for his habilitation thesis at what was then the Geilweilerhof Institute for Vine Breeding , where he dealt with the influence of photoperiodism and temperature on the development of grapevines . The habilitation for the subject "Plant cultivation and plant breeding with special consideration of viticulture and vine breeding" took place in 1963 at the University of Gießen. In 1965 he was appointed to the chair for viticulture at the University of Hohenheim . In 1970 he became director of the Federal Research Institute for Grapevine Breeding Geilweilerhof, but at the same time retained his chair in Hohenheim. He took over the management of the Federal Institute for Breeding Research in Viticulture and Horticulture in Siebeldingen in 1991. From 1992 until his retirement in 1995 he was provisional director of the Federal Institute for Breeding Research on Cultivated Plants in Quedlinburg . He was a member of many institutions and associations and received numerous awards, including the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and an honorary doctorate from the University of Horticulture in Budapest .

Act

Alleweldt dealt with increasing efficiency in grapevine breeding, especially with regard to the resistance of new grape varieties to pest infestation and environmental influences. The Regent grape variety, which is very resistant to fungal attack, is considered to be his most important breeding success . Other varieties bred by him are Orion , Phoenix , Sirius and Staufer . He also initiated research on in vitro culture and molecular biological methods in grapevine breeding.
