List of grape varieties

The white wine variety Orion is a new breed between Optima and Villard Blanc . The crossing took place in 1964 by Gerhardt Alleweldt at the Geilweilerhof Institute for Vine Breeding in Siebeldingen / Pfalz. The variety received plant variety protection in 1994 and was entered in the variety list in the same year . The name is derived from the constellation Orion .

Orion is similarly frost-resistant as Riesling and sufficiently resistant to powdery mildew ( downy mildew and powdery mildew ). In Germany approx. 4 hectares of vineyards are planted (as of 2007); there are also small stocks in southern England, Switzerland , Denmark and the Netherlands.

The flowery, fresh wine is often similar in type to the Müller-Thurgau . The wines of Orion tend to be somewhat more rapid aging , so a very long storage should be avoided.
