Viticulture in Virginia
Viticulture in Virginia refers to viticulture in the American state of Virginia . Under American law, every state and county is by definition a protected designation of origin and need not be recognized as such by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives .
Viticulture has been practiced in Virginia by European immigrants since the late 18th century. Since attempts with European noble grapes failed, wines from American wild grapes were first produced here. Only since 2000 has the proportion of Vitis vinifera varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and Cabernet Franc predominated . In addition, there is a significant share of almost 20 percent with French hybrid vines (e.g. Chambourcin , Chancellor , ...) and autochthonous descendants of American wild vines.
