Fer Servadou grape variety

Fer Servadou is a very old red wine variety that is cultivated under different names in several AOC areas in south-west France and is related to Cabernet (→ Cabernet Sauvignon ) . Its origin is believed to be in the Gironde department and in the Bergerac arrondissement .

Features and properties

Fer means iron and refers to the hard wood of the vine. Servadou is said to be derived from the long shelf life of the grapes. The budding occurs medium early. The grape variety shows medium to strong growth. The pruning should be long due to the fact that not all eyes are fertile. Fer Servadou is very resistant to powdery mildew and downy mildew , as well as Botrytis cinerea and black spot disease . But it is very susceptible to grape buds and cicadas . The yield is medium.

The small to medium-sized, elongated berries are black and have a thick skin. They form medium-sized, compact grapes. It is not very sensitive to frost and prefers poor, stony soils. The wines made from Fer Servadou are dark red in color and at the same time fine and powerful with a medium alcohol content. They can withstand a few years of storage in the bottle, especially if they have been matured in barriques . Otherwise, they can also be drunk young. Their aroma is mostly reminiscent of red fruits, especially raspberries.

Cultivation

The Fer Servadou is a single variety under the local name Mansoi in the red wines of the Aveyron department , especially in Marcillac .

In the course of returning to the local quality tradition, it has also regained an important role in the Tarn department . Although cultivated there as a Braucol for centuries, it had almost disappeared by 1960 . Complemented by Syrah , Cabernet Franc and Merlot , it now forms the backbone of the storable red wines from Gaillac .

Of less importance is the Fer Servadou in the wines of the Piedmont, where it is referred to as Pinenc . In the Madiran area , it takes up about 3% of the cultivated area. Approved is the Fer Servadou also in the neighboring areas AOC Côtes de Saint-Mont , Tursan and Béarn .

The tendency towards the shrinking acreage of this grape variety seems to have stopped. In 2007 , Fer Servadou will be grown again on approx. 1,634 hectares , after 1,250 hectares were planted in 1998.

In 2009, JM Boursiquot from the ENSAM Institute and Carol Meredith from the University of California, Davis published a DNA analysis. The evaluation of the results showed that the well-known Carménère grape variety is a natural cross between the Gros Cabernet and Cabernet Franc varieties . The old Gros Cabernet variety, for its part, was created by crossing the Fer Servadou and Txakoli varieties .
