Txakoli
Txakolí [ tʃako'li ] Basque also Txakolin (a) , Spanish Chacolí is a wine from the Basque Country and Cantabria .
Manufacturing
It is made largely from white grapes from the Hondarribi Zuri grape variety , but there is also a red Txakoli made from the Hondarribi Beltza grape variety . Hondarribi Zuri is related to the French grape variety Courbu .
character
It is a very dry, slightly sparkling wine with a high acid content. Until the 1980s , the quality of the Txakolis was very poor, so that the wine was practically only drunk at home. With the establishment of the first Denominación de Origen , however, the basis for a high quality wine was created.
Txakoli does not have a long shelf life and should therefore be drunk within one year of bottling. As is typical for the country, it is poured into glasses in a high arch.
Growing areas
The most important growing area of the Txakolis is the region around Getaria on the coast of Gipuzkoa ( Getariako Txakolina ). Other growing areas are Bizkaia ( Bizkaiko Txakolina ) and the region around Amurrio in Álava ( Arabako Txakolina ).
In and around Getaria 17 wineries produce approx. 10,000 hectoliters on approx. 170 ha.
Drinking habits
Txakoli is usually drunk as an aperitif in the late morning in the Basque Country .
