Courbu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The white grape variety Courbu blanc is grown in the Sud-Ouest wine-growing region in southwest France . The very old variety was threatened with extinction and was revived, although Courbu was still widely used until the early 1960s.

The variety produces strong, simply structured white wines with a delicate bouquet . Since the variety is high-yielding, the wine may lack character. Courbu is also used in small proportions as a blending partner with the white grape varieties Arrufiac , Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng . The grape variety is found in white wines of the appellations Béarn , Côtes de Saint-Mont , Irouléguy , Jurançon and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh .

In 2000 , a vineyard with 58 different clones of the Courbu vine was created in the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry for conservation purposes .

The clones 726, 727 and 812 are approved for viticulture. Clone 812 is usually the lowest-yielding one with the highest sugar output. A study published in 2007 shows that the grape varieties Courbu, Courbu Noir , Gros Courbu , Lauzet and Petit Courbu are genetically very closely related. The Gros Manseng variety also shows genetically related characteristics.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is densely haired, whitish in color and bordered in reddish. The greenish young leaves are lightly coated. The leaf margins are bronze.
  • The leaves are usually three-lobed (rarely five-lobed) and strongly indented. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical grape is small, sometimes shouldered. The round berries are small and golden yellow in color.

Courbu ripens almost 25-30 days after the Gutedel . It is therefore considered to ripen late. The vigorous variety produces consistently high yields. Courbu is susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and downy mildew of the grapevine . The variety is suitable for overripe harvests when the berries are affected by noble rot .
