Gros Manseng

The white grape variety Gros Manseng is native to the French wine-growing region Sud-Ouest . Together with the Courbu variety, it is the main component in the Jurançon Sec AOC wine . It is also used in the wines of the designations of origin of Béarn , Côtes de Saint-Mont , Floc de Gascogne , Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh , Tursan and the country wine Vin de Pays des Côtes de Gascogne . In 2007 the area under vines in France was 2,877 hectares.

It has medium-sized, pale green berries and is of lower quality than its related variety, the Petit Manseng . However, if you give your berries time to fully ripen, they can produce fresh, aromatic white wines full of strength and sufficient acidity. Together with Courbu and Petit Manseng, it is also suitable for the production of noble sweet wines .

A study published in 2007 shows that the grape varieties Gros Manseng, Gros Manseng de Lucq, Manseng Vert and Petit Manseng are genetically very closely related.

In France the clones 397, 439, 572, 634, 661, 662, 731 and 764 are approved. Clone 731 produces the highest quality.
