Hugo Schaefer
Hugo Schaefer (born June 30, 1894 in Elberfeld ; † February 3, 1920 ) was a German pilot, he was one of the better-known fighter pilots of the First World War .
Life
Schaefer joined the army in 1915. He only joined the air force in autumn 1917 and was deployed here on the western front with the Jasta 15 and 18. The optical identification of his Fokker D.VII was a winged snake on the fuselage of the aircraft.
Between March and October 1918, Schaefer shot down eleven enemy aircraft. He himself was shot down on June 17, 1918, but survived.
On February 3, 1920, Schaefer had a fatal accident in a plane crash.
Honors
The city of Magdeburg had temporarily named a street as Hugo-Schaefer-Straße in his honor .
