Ruby Cabernet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ruby Cabernet is a red wine variety . It is a new breed from Carignan noir and Cabernet Sauvignon . The cross was made by Harold Olmo at the University of California at Davis in 1936 and has been booming since the 1990s. In California (→ Viticulture in California ) it occupied around 2,580 hectares of vineyards in 2007 , there are other stocks in Argentina , Australia (approx. 1,142 hectares, as of 2008), Chile and South Africa (2,469 hectares, as of 2007). The worldwide population is estimated at around 6,500 hectares.

The aim of the breeding was to combine the heat tolerance of Carignan with the finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon and thus to develop a variety suitable for the hot regions of California for the production of bordeaux-like wines . The high-yielding vine has proven in practice that it is also suitable for cooler areas. In terms of quality, however, the high expectations placed on the red wines of the variety were disappointed. It is mostly used as a blend , but is increasingly being expanded as a single variety.
