Kirneck ruins

The ruin Kirneck , also called Kirnegg , Kürneck , Kürnach or Salvest , is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 780  m above sea level. NN rocks above the Kirnachtal between the town of Villingen-Schwenningen and Unterkirnach in the Black Forest-Baar district in Baden-Württemberg .

History and layout

The small castle was built as a dynasty castle at the end of the 12th century by the Lords of Kirneck, who were Zähringer ministerials . A Hugo von Kirneck is mentioned for the first time in 1185, and the castle itself appears in the sources around 1280. The von Kirneck family died out around 1400 and the castle fell to the city of Villingen in 1506. In 1810 the facility was demolished and used as a quarry. Immediately before this demolition still to keep have been present. At the foot of the rock there was also a chapel, which was consecrated to St. Wendelin in 1496 . An 18 meter long and seven meter high shield wall and remains of the wall are still preserved from the former castle complex. The gate entrance visible today on the shield wall was only recently installed. In 2010 the facility was renovated after it had previously been closed due to the risk of collapse.
