history

The castle was probably built around 1360 by the Counts of Fürstenberg on an earlier site from the 12th century to secure the connecting road between Baar and Breisgau and to control the ore deposits and their processing in the Eisenbachtal from the 16th century. The castle was mentioned in 1381, in 1485 by Count Heinrich VI. Von Fürstenberg called it a “worthless house” and destroyed it on May 8, 1525 in the German Peasants' War by the “Klettgau Heap” under Hans Müller .

The main castle with a view of the shield wall

The relatively small castle complex formed an irregular square without a keep . The facility was protected by a mighty shield wall in the west , which is still 15 meters high and 4.7 meters thick at its base . An artificial neck ditch separated the castle site from the mountain. In addition to the essential foundations of the core castle and the remains of a presumably upstream kennel , the mighty shield wall of the former castle complex has been preserved.

Remarks

  1. The most recent finds from the castle site, which are available to the Freiburg Monument Preservation, document an early castle similar in size to today's castle ruins around 1200 at the latest and the beginning of the new construction of Neu-Fürstenberg Castle around 1360.
