history
A castle on the Fürstenberg probably existed from the 12th century. Servants of the Zähringer who were based in Neudingen at the foot of the mountain come into question as builders . First mentioned in writing in 1175, the castle passed from the Counts of Zollern to the Dukes of Zähringen that year . In 1218, Berthold V (1186–1218), the last Zähringen duke, died. His inheritance on the Fürstenberg came from the Counts of Urach who were related to him . Heinrich von Urach († 1284) moved his residence to the Fürstenberg by 1250 and named himself afterwards "Count Heinrich von Fürstenberg ". In addition to the castle, he also had the settlement on the Fürstenberg expanded, which was granted town charter in 1278. At the beginning of the 16th century the castle was rebuilt and the fortifications renewed. In the Peasants' War of 1524/25, insurgents stormed the Fürstenberg. In 1632, during the Thirty Years War , the castle and town were largely destroyed. After the catastrophic fire of 1841, the town of Fürstenberg was rebuilt at the foot of the mountain and is now a district of Hüfingen. In the 19th century at the latest, the remains of the castle complex were also removed. Only the slightest signs of construction have survived from it.
