Ernst Wagner

Ernst Hermann Wagner (born April 5, 1832 in Karlsruhe ; † March 7, 1920 ibid) was a German teacher and archaeologist who worked in Baden .

Life

Ernst Wagner, son of Karl Friedrich Hermann Wagner (1804–1872), parish priest and teacher in Schwäbisch Gmünd , studied Protestant theology and philology at the University of Tübingen , where he was also a member of the Tübingen royal society Roigel . In 1854 he passed the first theological examination and in 1855/56 worked as a teacher in the private educational institution of privy councilor Gerd Eiler in Freiimfelde near Halle , in 1856/57 as city vicar in Schwäbisch Gmünd and in 1857/58 as a teaching trainee in Ludwigsburg . In 1858 he was in Tübingen in Ferdinand Christian Baur Dr. theol. doctorate and then worked until 1860 as a repetitionist at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Schöntal . From 1861 to 1863 he worked as a tutor for the children of Lord Russell in London . In 1864 he returned to the secondary school in Tübingen as a teaching trainee and was then from October 1864 to 1875 educator of the Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich in Karlsruhe with the title of professor. From 1867 he was also director of the Friedrichschule in Karlsruhe. From 1875 until his retirement in 1919 he was in charge of the Grand Ducal Collection of Antiquities and Ethnology in Karlsruhe as the Grand Ducal Conservator of Antiquities and the collections associated with them in Baden and was responsible for the preservation of monuments in the Grand Duchy of Baden . As an archaeologist, he created a pioneering directory of archaeological sites. Wagner's research on the Bronze Age and urnfield culture became important .

Ernst Wagner was a member of numerous learned associations, such as the Baden Historical Commission (1883) and the administrative committee of the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg (1884); the Württemberg Antiquities Association (honorary member 1887), the Reich Limes Commission (1892); of the Association for the History of the Baar in Donaueschingen (honorary member 1895); of the Natural Science Association in Karlsruhe (honorary member 1908); of the Karlsruhe Art Association (honorary board member 1909); of the German Archaeological Institute , the supervisory board of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz and corresponding member of the Société royale d'archéologie de Bruxelles . In 1892 he was appointed Privy Councilor III. Class, 1906 appointed Privy Council II. Class and 1914 Real Privy Council. In 1908 he became Dr. phil. hc from the University of Tübingen. Wagner was honored many times as a prince educator and scholar, so he received the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of the Zähringer Löwen (1871), with oak leaves and Prussian Crown Order III. Class (1873), the Prussian Red Eagle Order IV. Class (1872), the Commander's Cross II. Class of the Norwegian Order of St. Olaf (1881), the Commander's Cross II. Class (1896), with oak leaves (1900) from the Order of Berthold I . (1904), with a star (1912), the star for the Bavarian Michaels Order II. Class (1909) and the War Merit Cross (1917).
