The Fürstenberg is 918.1  m above sea level. NHN high Zeugenberg on the Baar in Baden-Württemberg . It lies above the district of the same name Fürstenberg von Hüfingen , as the foremost mountain of the length , which in turn belongs to the Baaralb between the Heuberg and the Black Forest or Randen and the Swiss Jura . The name of the mountain (and also of the noble family) is therefore not derived from the later princes of Fürstenberg , but from this "most important mountain".

prehistory

A study carried out in 2010/2011 showed that there was a "large-scale hillside settlement of the late Urnfields and especially the Hallstatt period " on the Fürstenberg .

history

Originally the ancestral castle of the Counts of Fürstenberg , Fürstenberg Castle , was on the hilltop. The noble family is a side line of the Counts of Urach . Count Heinrich I von Urach placed his seat on the Fürstenberg in the middle of the 13th century and from then on called himself "Count von Fürstenberg" after the mountain. Since there were many rebels among the Fürstenberg citizens during the Peasant War , the Princes von Fürstenberg left the mountain again. On the hilltop of the Fürstenberg there was a town that burned down completely on the morning of July 18, 1841 due to a fire probably triggered by flying sparks and strongly fanned by stormy winds and was rebuilt at the foot of the mountain.

Todays situation

Augustine Chapel on the Fürstenberg

Today, in addition to the remains of the cemetery and wall moats of the former castle town, there is an open stepped gable chapel built in 1964 (formal reference to traditional farmhouses on the Baar) in honor of the late cardinal Augustin Bea , who comes from the nearby Riedböhringen.

The panoramic summit plateau (with a view over Baar, the Black Forest and the Swiss Alps) is a popular hiking destination and starting point for hang-gliders and paragliders .

Since the summer of 2012, a historical educational trail has been leading around the top of the Fürstenberg. Numerous display boards provide information on the geology, botany and settlement of the mountain.
