North Fork of Roanoke AVA is a wine-growing region in the US state of Virginia . Recognition as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) took place in 1983 and was expanded in 1987. The grape varieties grown include Alicante Bouschet , Cabernet Franc , Cabernet Sauvignon , Chardonnay , Malbec , Merlot , Norton , Petit Verdot , Sangiovese , Syrah and Viognier .

location

The area in the southwest of the state of Virginia extends over a length of about 35 kilometers over the eastern slopes of the Allegheny Mountains , a mountain range of the Blue Ridge Mountains , in the counties of Roanoke and Montgomery and includes part of the Roanoke River valley. The height above sea level is between 360 and 670 meters.

The region's climate is humid all year round with prevailing westerly winds, the winters are usually very cold with occasional sudden snowstorms and blizzards , while the summer months usually remain warm and humid.
