Norton (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Norton is a red wine variety . It comes from a spontaneous cross between Vitis aestivalis and Vitis labrusca . In outdated sources it is still described as a pure descendant of Vitis aestivalis. In addition to Catawba , Concord and Scuppernong, the hybrid is one of the historically most important autochthonous American vines. Norton grapes are the state fruit of Missouri and are therefore one of the landmarks of the state (→ Viticulture in Missouri ).

It was named after Dr. Named Daniel Norborne Norton (November 1794 - January 23, 1843) of Richmond -Virginia. When Norton married Elizabeth Jaquelin Call in 1818, he received nearly ten hectares of agricultural land as a dowry . When his wife died barely three years later while giving birth to their first child, he devoted himself intensively to his property called Magnolia Farm . There he planted various grape varieties in addition to an abundance of plants. At that time he was in intensive correspondence with William Prince, who ran a tree nursery in Flushing . William Prince provided a first description of the Norton grape variety in his History of the wine in 1830 , which was accordingly selected between 1821 and 1830.
