List of grape varieties

Concord is a red wine from the USA. It is an “interspecific cross” and is a table and wine grape. The wines have a light ruby red color, are astringent and have a dominant, artificial strawberry taste, the typical fox tone .

Descent, origin

The variety is an interspecific cross between Catawba ( Vitis labrusca x Semillon ) x Vitis labrusca .

Concord was developed in 1849 by Ephraim Wales Bull in the town of Concord, Massachusetts . He selected the most suitable plants for him from over 20,000 seedlings . In 1853, Bull won a competition at the Boston Horticultural Society Exhibition . The variety has been marketed since 1854 due to its success.

A DNA analysis commissioned by the Regional Administrative Court of Burgenland (Austria) at the Julius Kühn Institute in the course of a legal dispute over the order to clear Ripatella sticks showed that the Ripatella and Concord varieties are identical. Like the Delaware and Elvira varieties , it is a cross between Vitis vinifera and other species of the genus Vitis .

distribution

Worldwide there is a cultivation area of 12,238 hectares. The main producers are the states of Washington (→ viticulture in Washington ) and New York (→ viticulture in New York ), i.e. northern regions.

Other important growing areas are Canada , Brazil , Uruguay and earlier, after the phylloxera disaster , also Europe. In the EU it is only permitted in exceptional cases , for example in the Uhudler , and can hardly be marketed commercially. Therefore it has almost disappeared in Western Europe. Only in Eastern Europe, in Moldova , does it still play a role.

properties

The grape variety is vigorous and brings high yields. It prefers sandy soils. The resistance to the genuine and downy mildew and winter frosts is high. It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting.

Wine, other products

The variety is used extensively in the USA both as a table grape and as a vine for making wine . The wines have a bright ruby red color, are astringent and have a dominant-looking artificial strawberry flavor, the typical Fuchston . Thomas Welch developed the first grape juice from the Concord grape variety in 1869 by making the juice durable through pasteurization and protecting it from spontaneous fermentation. Welch also offered the juice to the church, which gladly accepted the product as a non-alcoholic alternative during the Eucharist .

An important product from Concord is also a grape jelly .
