Catawba (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Catawba is a red grape that has been marketed by John Adlum in the State of Maryland since 1823 . The apparently wild saplings were found around 1801 by a gentleman named Murray. The location given is an area in Buncombe County near the Catawba River in the state of North Carolina . Some saplings came into the possession of General Davy, who propagated the saplings between 1807 and 1816. He sent a few copies to friends in Maryland, where they were finally noticed by Adlum in the Scholl family's garden. Adlum had a total of 80 hectares of vineyards and in 1823 he sent Thomas Jeffersonone from Catawba gekelterte bottle of wine.

The variety is a hybrid vine in which genes from the wild vines Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera are present: Vitis Sémillon x Vitis Labrusca.

For later crossings, it served together with a wild Vitis Labrusca as parents for the well-known Concord vine.

In Brazil it developed into an important red wine grape. It is mainly grown in the São Paulo area . In the United States, the Catawba is particularly widespread in the US states of New York (→ viticulture in New York) and Arkansas (→ viticulture in Arkansas ). It is used there as a table grape , is processed into grape juice and jelly and is used in the production of sparkling wine and simple table wine . In Canada , the main focus of the spread is the Ontario region . Smaller plantings are also known in South Africa .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The tip of the shoot is rather hairy and has a carmine-red tinge. The young leaves are yellowish green and they are lightly hairy.
  • The large leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is closed with the ends overlapping. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set wide in comparison to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called the leaf blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium-sized and has dense berries. The round berries are large and dark red in color. The berries have a fox tone .

The Catawba grape variety ripens approx. 20 days after the Gutedel and is therefore one of the mid-late ripening varieties.
