List of grape varieties |
Elvira is a white wine variety of American origin. It is probably a natural cross between the varieties Taylor ( Vitis rupestris x Vitis aestivalis ?) And Martha ? (Variant of the Vitis labrusca vine Concord ). It was selected by Jacob Rommel in a vineyard near Morrison in Missouri in 1862 and planted out from 1863. Rommel had its first harvest in 1869 and Elvira was brought to Europe early on.
Grapes of the Elvira variety have a very thin, almost transparent berry skin. Because of its pronounced resistance to phylloxera and powdery mildew ( powdery mildew and downy mildew of the grapevine ), it is also grown unprocessed as a direct carrier and produces acidic white wines with a Fox tone . Elvira is used in southern Burgenland (Austria) to produce the local specialty Uhudler , but the grape variety is also found in Brazil, Hungary and the Ukraine. In the United States, small populations were held in Illinois and New York .
