Direct carrier
A direct producer or auto vehicle is in viticulture a Rebstock who does not grafted , was (finished) so on its own roots growing. Such a vine is called "rootless". In common parlance, the terms direct-carrier , self- carrier , yield hybrids and hybrid are often used identically.
Almost all European grape varieties are grafted ( grafted ) and therefore not direct carriers, since the European vineyards were almost completely destroyed after the phylloxera was introduced . By grafting on rootstock vines that were sufficiently resistant to phylloxera , it was possible to preserve the European varieties.
