Ozark Highlands AVA is a wine-growing region in the US state of Missouri that has been recognized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives since August 31, 1987 .

The vineyards are distributed over areas in the south of Missouri within the Ozark Mountains east of Jefferson City to the Eleven Point River in the south. The definition includes areas in the administrative units Phelps County , Maries County , Osage County , Gasconade County , Franklin County , Crawford County , Shannon County , Dent County , Texas , Reynolds County and Pulaski .

The designation of origin lies as an enclave within the superordinate Ozark Mountain AVA . The Ozark Highlands are drier than the surrounding area, but the sandy loam soil has good moisture storage capacity. The first plantings with vines were made by Italian immigrants. The selection of grape varieties is not limited to autochthonous selections, but also includes varieties from the families Vitis vinifera , Vitis labrusca and French hybrid vines .
