Monticello AVA (recognized since January 23, 1984) is a wine-growing region in the US state of Virginia . The area is located in the Albemarle County , Greene County , Orange County, and Nelson County administrative areas . The American Viticultural Area (AVA) is located in the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains . The protected designation of origin has been recognized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives .

Of the almost 30 known grape varieties in the region, the most important are Cabernet Franc , Chardonnay and Viognier . However, due to the still young history of viticulture, many attempts are still being made to find the most suitable varieties and locations.

history

The first records of viticulture in the region date back to the late 1780s when Thomas Jefferson hired the Italian Phillip Mazzei to be the winemaker. The first attempts with mainly Italian grape varieties were not very successful. Until the time of Prohibition, there was a modest viticulture in the region, which was not revived until the 1970s.

In particular, the Italian family Zonin set new impulses with the Barboursville Vineyards in Orange County.
