Rkaziteli ( Georgian რქაწითელი ) is an autochthonous white wine variety that, like the Saperawi variety, comes from the Kakheti region at the foot of the Caucasus in eastern Georgia .

Origin, distribution

5000 year old clay jugs with seeds of this grape variety were found near the city of Wani . According to Jancis Robinson, it was the most common grape variety in the former Soviet Union . After a grapevine clearing program decided under Gorbachev in the mid-1980s, the Rkaziteli vineyards decreased significantly. At the beginning of the 1990s there were still around 48,000 hectares of planted area on what was then the territory of the Soviet Union. In 2010 there were 25,324 ha in Georgia, 11,508 ha in the Republic of Moldova , 11,552 ha in Ukraine, 2,469 ha in Armenia , 3,121 ha in Bulgaria and 3552 ha in Kazakhstan . Romania (356 ha in 2010), Russia ( 2010 702 ha) and Croatia (2010 57 ha). The worldwide population was 58,641 ha in 2010. The name Rkaziteli means roughly “red stem ” ( რქა , rka = stem, shoot, shoot; წითელი , ziteli = red).

Wine

While straw-yellow fresh wines are made according to international tastes, the Georgians prefer a more oxidative, heavy wine style. In general, the wine can be stored for a few years. The variety is also suitable for the expansion of dessert wines and for making wines in the style of a sherry . One of the best-known Georgian traditional wines , the rather light and fruity Zinandali , is a blend that contains 85% Rkaziteli.
